Practical Information
Visa Requirements
Before entering Colombia, all travelers need to register with the Colombian authorities at the Check Mig website, available at https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf. The registration can be done up to 72 hours prior to boarding your flight to Colombia and up to one hour prior to your flight.
Most short-term visitors do not require a visa. However, Colombia requires a visa for countries listed at the following link: https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/tramites_servicios/visa/requisitos. Please note that the site is in Spanish, but has a link to the application at the top (“Make your visa application online here”).
COVID
Visitors need to present their COVID vaccination card or proof of a PCR / antigen test. For further information, see https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/newsroom/news/requisitos-sanitarios-relativos-covid-19-ingresar-colombia. Please note that the automatic translation of that site into English appears inaccurate. PCR tests need to be done within 72 hours of departure, antigen tests need to be done within 48 hours of departure if you do not have proof of a COVID vaccination that meets WHO requirements, see https://www.minsalud.gov.co/sites/rid/Lists/BibliotecaDigital/RIDE/DE/COM/lista-vacunas-covid-19.pdf.
Arrival and Local Transport
Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is likely the main gateway for most participants of SIEL 2023. Visitors have various choices to get from the airport to their accommodation.
One option is to use certified taxis. There is one counter prior to leaving the arrivals area and there is also a line outside of the terminal. Both will let you register your destination and will tell you the approximate price (the final price may vary e.g. because of traffic conditions). Another option is using a ride hailing app such as Cabify, Uber, Didi or Taxis Libre.
We suggest using ride hailing apps for any trips during the conference instead of hailing a taxi on the street. The apps provide security measures that the on-street taxis do not.
Bogota’s public transport system is another option. However, as a first time visitor we do not suggest using local buses as they can get quite crowded and there have been reports of pickpocketing. You need a card TULLAVE which can be bought at the airport or at the nearest Transmilenio station. The card can be topped up either at the station or at certain supermarkets where the service is available.
The closest Transmilenio stations to Universidad Externado and Universidad del Rosario are ‘Las Aguas’ and ‘Museo del Oro’.
Conference Location
The conference is co-hosted by the Universidad Externado de Colombia and Universidad del Rosario. Both universities are located close to the historic center of the city, an area called La Candelaria. Bogotá is a modern and vibrant city and a business hub, with access to all the services that any cosmopolitan city offers. However, it is important to be mindful of safety and security and to avoid certain areas such as the south of the city (anything beyond Calle 6 to the south, areas like Bosa, Kennedy, Suba). We recommend staying within the areas marked up on the following map.
Accommodation
Universidad Externado de Colombia has corporate agreements with various hotels in the city (shown in the table below) which are available for participants of SIEL 2023.

Health recommendations
We recommend obtaining travel insurance. Given Bogota’s location (2600m closer to the stars, as the local saying goes), some travelers might feel altitude sickness. If symptoms persist, please contact your hotel in the first instance or seek medical attention.
About Bogotá
Because of the altitude, temperatures range between 12°C and 17°C during the day. However, the weather can change from one minute to the other. Try to carry an umbrella with you and use warm clothing.
Bogota is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, full of places and things to do. For further information please see https://colombia.travel/en/bogota https://www.lonelyplanet.com/colombia/bogota.
The SIEL 2023 Google map provides additional restaurant and tourist attractions. Please see https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1C339nkO8NvofsrIvqeIYUPBRj9NYefQ&ll=5.023923006328746%2C-74.64941117605667&z=9
Be mindful and stay in lively areas as much as possible. Do not accept anything from strangers on the street. Try to avoid using your mobile on the street. In case of emergency, travelers can call #123 or the security personnel on university premises.
Most purchases or services can be paid by credit or debit card. However, we recommend carrying some Colombian pesos with you to pay at certain convenience stores or for public transportation purposes. There are ATMs at the airport and throughout the city.
If you want to use your mobile in Colombia you can purchase a SIM card at stores such as Carulla, Exito (both larger supermarket chains) and even certain next-door convenience stores close to your hotel. Likewise, you can always check the availability of an eSIM from your app store.
