A conference presented by the IBA Trade and Customs Law Committee

    Dear Colleague,

We are delighted to announce details of the upcoming internative webinar, 'Recession and Recovery: The Emerging Trade Issues and Policy Changes', taking place from

    1500 - 1630 GMT on Monday 14th December 2009.

    REGISTER NOW!

As the global economic slowdown enters what we hope is its more mature phases, a growing wave of protectionism is creating a new set of international trade issues and some difficult policy choices.  In this first official webinar offered by the International Bar Association, a panel of three highly distinguished speakers will exchange views and answer questions on a range of related issues:

    • Is the growing tide of protectionism a temporary phenomenon or a new reality?

    • What are the longer term business and policy implications of programmes such as “Buy American” and bailouts and how should the world trading order be addressing these programmes?

    • Is protectionism displacing and/or becoming the driving force in other policy areas, e.g. trade and the environment?

    Speakers:

Mr. Karan Bhatia, Vice president & Senior Counsel, International Law and Policy, General Electric Company, Washington DC, USA (and former Deputy United States Trade Representative).

Mr. Osamu Umejima, Counsel, White & Case, Tokyo, Japan (and former Director, Antidumping and Related Rules in Multilateral Trade System Department, Trade Policy Bureau at METI).

Mr. Hector Torres, Counsellor, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, World Trade Organization, Geneva, Switzerland

    A new conference format:

Attendees will be able to claim CLE/CPD credits by tuning in live, and can submit questions in real time to the speakers as the webinar progresses, just as they can at a traditional IBA Conference, all from the comfort of the office! Powered by leading webcasting and virtual event specialists ON24, the interactive, live webinar is a great opportunity for busy practitioners to gain some last minute CLE/CPD for 2009, or steal a march on the 2010 requirement.

To register for this event, please visit the event web page. You will be sent full detail as to how to log in to the event, and a reminder via email one hour prior to the event commencing.
